Incentive Spirometery
We have recently introduced incentive spirometery for our patients undergoing major elective colorectal surgery and are hoping to expand this to other specialties too.
An incentive spirometer is a device which encourages patients to take slow deep breaths. This can reduce the risk of chest infections in the post-operative period. The machine is provided at the preoperative assessment along with an information booklet. The nurse will demonstrate how to use the machine.
We encourage patients to use the incentive spirometer 5 times a day, undertaking 5 deep breaths each time.
